Who was she?
Maria Sklodowska was born in Warsaw in 1867, in an occupied Poland where women had no right to attend university. She therefore studied clandestinely in an illegal "flying university," while working as a governess to fund her sister's education — with the promise that her sister would later help her in return. At 24, she finally reached Paris and the Sorbonne, where she lived in a freezing room, barely ate, and graduated top of her class in physics.
With her husband Pierre Curie, she discovered two elements — polonium (named after her homeland) and radium — at the cost of titanic work: tonnes of ore processed by hand in a shed. Nobel Prize in physics in 1903 (the committee initially wanted to exclude her in favour of the men alone), she carried on alone after Pierre's accidental death, earning the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1911, and becoming the first female professor at the Sorbonne. During World War One, she equipped radiological vehicles — the "little Curies" — that would save countless wounded on the front.
